This is just a note to say that Professor J.R. McNeill of Georgetown University has been kind enough and generous enough with his time to write a reply to my own letter. Since the letter is addressed to me, I do not intend to post it or my reply unless he gives me encouragement to do that.
For now I will just say that he has addressed the issue and is essentially the first to do so. Whether this evolves into a greater understanding cannot be foreseen but I wish to register my gratitude and respect for his gesture.
